| Endemic to Hawaii, Ohelo is found in the mountains of Maui and Hawaii Island and it is one of the first plants to colonize new volcanic landscapes. Considered sacred to Pele, the volcano goddess, the Ohelo berries are also a favorite of the Hawaiian Nene goose. So, if you are picking Ohelo berries, be sure to leave some for the Nene and throw a few in the direction of of the volcano. |
